Thumbs up Help importing zipped bookmarks into Iceweasel

Okay, I am using Iceweasel 2.0.0.6 on an amd64 install of Debian 4.0 Etch.

I would like to import a folder of internet book marks that were taken from a windows pc favorites folder, zipped into one file, and emailed to me.

I currently have a folder on my desktop called Favorites where I extracted the contents of the original zip file.

Is there any way to import those bookmarks relatively painlessly into Iceweasel?

Meaning without me having to actually open the bookmarks.html file in an editor and cutting-and-pasting all 200 or 300 bookmarks into the damn html file?

Help. Please. Google is normally my friend but hasn't been so helpful thus far.

Try bookmarks/organize

My bookmarks were in a HTML, not zipped, so I'm not sure whether this helps you but..... when I tried to import my windows favourites using file/import the message came back "no suitable file detected" or something like that but I was able to import using bookmarks/ organize then finding the relevant file.

I did this once, but it was from a reinstall with Debian. I'm not sure if it will work with Windows bookmarks or not. What I did (using KDE) was go to the home folder then open your-user-name folder. I then clicked view on the menu bar and clicked show hidden folders. I opened the hidden .mozilla folder, then I opened the firefox folder, finally I opened the only folder inside of the firefox folder. Inside of that folder there is the document called bookmarks.html. I replaced that document with my saved bookmarks.html file from the previous install. This will probably only work if your old bookmark file is also named bookmarks.html

A very easy solution would be to install Firefox on your windows box then it will automatically import all of your IE favourites. Next install foxmarks, a firefox add-on, and upload your favourites to the foxmark server. Then install foxmarks on Iceweasel on your debian box. Import your bookmarks from the foxmark server. Simple:-)

Not really

I understand you already have the bookmarks.html file on your Debian box, right? Then it's a simple copy/paste job: copy the file to the folder .mozilla/default/<random_characters>.slt/bookmarks.html in your home-directory. The <random_characters> are really completely randomly picked characters to designate a profile.

It's likely that you already have some bookmarks and you want to add the new ones to it. That can easely be done from the commandline:
Code:
cat <full/path/to>/bookmarks.html >> /home/<username>/.mozilla/default/<random_characters>.slt/bookmarks.html

Went the simple route

Thank you to everyone who replied.

I went for the simplest solution I could think of.

I installed Firefox on my windows box, which then imported all of the IE7 bookmarks. Then, as one or two of you mentioned, it was just a matter of taking the newly created bookmarks.html file and emailing and downloading it on my debian box at home.

Then I just mv-ed it to my /home/.mozilla/<random stuff>.profile or whatever folder.

Re-opened Firefox, and, presto-change-o!, there were my bookmarks.

Thanks again to everyone who replied.
