gparted doesn't work in the new Debian 10.0 in my Dell Inspiron 1545
I've done two installations of Debian 10.0 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop and chose Gnome (under Xorg, Gnome Weyland and Mate). I installed it using the Netinstall CD disk. In both cases, I can't use gparted. I installed it, but when I start, I enter the root password, but the application doesn't open. Even in the Mate graphical manager.
I already received the following message when I tried to format a USB stick:
"Error synchronizing after initial wipe: timed out waiting for object (udisks-error-quark, 0)"
When I used it on the / usr / sbin / gparted terminal I received the following error message:
"Unit tmp.mount does not exist, proceeding anyway."
I bag your pardon for my poor English but my native language is Portuguese.
I hope you can help me.
I decided to try install Linux Mint and it happened the same. Gparted didn't work also. I am thinking that it is a problem with the hardware obsolete of my laptop. It is bought in 2007... Before I retired from my work at the Federal university in 2010... So, Ididn't buy another one, but now I will need to change it...
Thanks a lot for the help.
No, I'm not blaming you, it's just an intuition. Other hardware-related applications (psemsor for instance) are also not working properly. Just this. I am very thankful for your interest to help me.
As soon I test gparted live I will let you know.
While your hardware might be a bit on the old side in computer years it may not the problem. Again it appears that it is the desktop. To see which display server your system is running try the command in a terminal window.
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
I am running Mint 19.2 in Virtualbox and it could be how the VM is setup but it is running x11.
I am also running debian 10 xfce in Virtualbox and it is also running x11. However, I see the same error from the command line but gparted runs as expected from the desktop menu. It looks like a known bug. psensor starts from the menu and terminal but not as root.
If I use su - gparted fails but but using just su it starts from a terminal window although I see the same error. Not sure the exact reasons but root can not open tmp.mount due to tmpfs symlinks having their sticky bit set.
djk44883, I tested using Gparted Live and it works. It identify all my disks and partitions. The problem it seems to be with System Install. I installed Linux Mint and the problem re-pitted. Gparted starts but don't open. I already try using sudo in console but didn't work at all. It seems to be connected with the bug cited above. But, how to overcome it? As I already say. My English is too poor and I can't to see the solution. Is it to download gparted direct from Gparted site for Debian (Linux Mint) and install it?
I will try.

I must say I don't see what problem that could be:
you can use gparted Live
you can install Linux Mint
- so you say you cannot use gparted as installed on Linux Mint?
Have you tried simply
