gparted doesn't work in the new Debian 10.0 in my Dell Inspiron 1545

I've done two installations of Debian 10.0 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop and chose Gnome (under Xorg, Gnome Weyland and Mate). I installed it using the Netinstall CD disk. In both cases, I can't use gparted. I installed it, but when I start, I enter the root password, but the application doesn't open. Even in the Mate graphical manager.
I already received the following message when I tried to format a USB stick:
"Error synchronizing after initial wipe: timed out waiting for object (udisks-error-quark, 0)"
When I used it on the / usr / sbin / gparted terminal I received the following error message:
"Unit tmp.mount does not exist, proceeding anyway."
I bag your pardon for my poor English but my native language is Portuguese.
I hope you can help me.

I have a feeling it has to do with Wayland not allowing root privileged to graphical applications.

It's mentioned here with synaptic https://wiki.debian.org/NewInBuster but I thought gparted used polkit - pkexe.

It's just strong speculation, I use mate lightdm and xorg along with sudo/gksudo all over the place...

I decided to try install Linux Mint and it happened the same. Gparted didn't work also. I am thinking that it is a problem with the hardware obsolete of my laptop. It is bought in 2007... Before I retired from my work at the Federal university in 2010... So, Ididn't buy another one, but now I will need to change it...
Thanks a lot for the help.

It seems illogical to me that a new install succeeds, yet you blame the gparted problem on old hardware.

Is Linux Mint using wayland or Xorg to provide a graphical desktop?

Searching parts of your error message could also prove helpful.

No, don't blame us for spending money you don't need... no help here hinted your hardware was too old! Your configuration may be an issue.

Try gparted live - https://gparted.org/ confirm your conclusion... new hardware won't get around how Wayland works.

No, I'm not blaming you, it's just an intuition. Other hardware-related applications (psemsor for instance) are also not working properly. Just this. I am very thankful for your interest to help me.
As soon I test gparted live I will let you know.

What do you mean by this? Did you install gparted after installing debian, and if so how?

I believe the problem is related to wayland, ( previously mentioned )

it is refusing to allow the graphical sudo login to grant root privileges.

a work around might be to launch gparted from command line with sudo
Code:
sudo gparted
but I imagine that will also be denied by wayland.

While your hardware might be a bit on the old side in computer years it may not the problem. Again it appears that it is the desktop. To see which display server your system is running try the command in a terminal window.

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

I am running Mint 19.2 in Virtualbox and it could be how the VM is setup but it is running x11.

I am also running debian 10 xfce in Virtualbox and it is also running x11. However, I see the same error from the command line but gparted runs as expected from the desktop menu. It looks like a known bug. psensor starts from the menu and terminal but not as root.

yeah, I'm also using a non-wayland DE ( lxqt )
I suppose could get a wayland DE setup to try and find a work around

Here is the bug report.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...d/+bug/1744372

If I use su - gparted fails but but using just su it starts from a terminal window although I see the same error. Not sure the exact reasons but root can not open tmp.mount due to tmpfs symlinks having their sticky bit set.

djk44883, I tested using Gparted Live and it works. It identify all my disks and partitions. The problem it seems to be with System Install. I installed Linux Mint and the problem re-pitted. Gparted starts but don't open. I already try using sudo in console but didn't work at all. It seems to be connected with the bug cited above. But, how to overcome it? As I already say. My English is too poor and I can't to see the solution. Is it to download gparted direct from Gparted site for Debian (Linux Mint) and install it?
I will try.

might I ask what you are using gparted for?

it is a nice GUI, but if you are doing some basic partitioning a command line partitioner is quick and simple.

/sbin/parted is probably a little too sparse

however cfdisk is probably easy enough for most
Code:
sudo cfdisk /dev/sdc
# assuming sdc is your usb stick
sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc1
# assuming 1 partition

Have you tried starting gparted from the desktop menu and not from a terminal window?

I must say I don't see what problem that could be:
  • you can use gparted Live
  • you can install Linux Mint

- so you say you cannot use gparted as installed on Linux Mint?
Have you tried simply
Code:
sudo gparted
???
