Hi there, I did a knoppix hd install, and all has gone well so far. I apt-got GNOME and some other programs. Also, I did a dist-upgrade. Everything seems to be working fine, the only thing bothering me is, I can not change the controls in GNOME. No matter what theme I try, crux, thin-ice etc. the controls still appear
as if they are from KDE. I'm totally lost on this one. any help would be appreciated. Here is a screenshot, notice the rounded KDE like window list icons at the bottom, also the slider is totally kde. I can't change either of these.
I just installed from Knoppix as well and got GNOME too, however I did not have this problem. Can you not click on Applications -> Desktop Preferences -> Theme and choose a different control/window border?
When I upgraded to GNOME I believe that I "apt-got" gnome, gnome-bin, gnome-core, gnome-desktop-environment, and gnome-themes-extra. Make sure you at least got gnome-bin and gnome-core.
ok, I tried deleting the .gtkrc files. But my situation is still the same. Pibby, I did apt-get gnome and that installed all the files you mentioned except gnome-themes-extra. I double checked just to make sure. Also, I have tried to change the controls under applications -> Desktop Preferences -> Theme but to no avail, Only the colors change not the actual widgets.
If you click on "Theme Details" a button on the right in Applications -> Desktop Preferences -> Theme then you can change the "Control" (as well as the window border and icons). Try changing the control and I believe that will fix the problem.

pibby, I tried that, still nothing. It's weird, because the colors change when I select different control themes but, the widgets don't change. Thanks for the reply. This is really freaking me out. Any other ideas.
Hmm, the only other thing I can think of is to install more gtk2-engines. I've never had this experience, so don't know what to tell ya. Maybe check on the knoppix forums at http://www.knoppix.net/forum ?
I found the problem gtk-geramik . I came across this possible solution in the MEPIS fourms, at their site. I did apt-get remove gtk-engines-geramik* and gtk2-engines-geramik*, and everything is back to normal. I am able to change the controls now. I have no idea as to why the gtk-geramik engines would not change the controls along with the rest of the theme.
