To rename a user. It is important that the user be NOT logged in.
usermod -l new_loginname old_loginname
then
usermod -dm new_loginname old_loginname
to create the new home directory for loginname and move the contents of the old home directory to the new one.

To update the users name which goes in the /etc/ password comments field
usermod -c "comments" username

For more info
man usermod

Aside from the password you can edit first name, last name, shell, home directory, etc. by editing /etc/passwd by hand. "vim /etc/passwd"
