Documentation for Debian

At the risk of being criticised I am posting to ask about where I might locate good quality documentation for Debian.

I have looked at the various documentation links on the Wiki e.g.https://www.debian.org/doc/user-manuals#quick-reference and in particular the Debian Reference and the Debian FAQ. Whilst these are fairly readable I have found the rest of the Wiki to be of variable quality and somewhat disjointed.

For example trying to search for comprehensive information about time settings, system clock , hardware clock etc led me to https://wiki.debian.org/DateTime?act...esearch=Titles. Whilst this is useful it is not comprehensive - contrasted with the detailed Arch Wiki documentation on this same topic https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/time which even goes so far as to explain how to adjust a windows system to optimise a dual boot system.

I really like Debian and would like to understand it better but I find the lack of "joined-up" documentation very frustrating - in fact I am tempted to consider Arch ( the documentation seems particularly good) but it seems like a lot of work to get Arch set up especially when Debian is so much easier to install.

What do you think about Debian documentation? Do you agree/disagree? Any suggestion for good sources ?

Hi,

for documentation on individual packages, my first stop is always /usr/share/doc/<pacakge>/README.Debian. The next stop is to search wiki.debian.org.

For overall documentation I highly recommend the The Debian Administrator's Handbook. It's available at http://debian-handbook.info/ and is also packaged as debian-handbook. Eg
Code:
apt-get install debian-handbook
Failing the above point your favourite search engine at www.linuxquestions.org and if the answer is not there, post a question right here.

HTH,

Evo2.

Yes to all of that. The wiki is great. The handbook has a lot of information in it that is good for all distros.

There is also the Securing Debian Manual available on line or as a pdf.

How do I read the documentation after install? "debian-handbook" gave me "bash: debian-handbook: command not found."

You can open /usr/share/doc/debian-handbook/html/index.html in a web browser.
