macondo, i wonder what i am doing with linux if i donīt want to set up my config file the way someone wants me to. after all the whole point of using linux is to learn what a specific distro has in mind, right?
i just donīt undestand what i break if i manually input my resolution and refresh rate. your heart maybe?
i know the debian way, i have tried it on many different hardware. it just sucks, since simple and medium leave you with inadequate resolution/refresh rate. they have not worked on my systems ever the way they should. medium asks: what resolution do you want? i answer: 1280x960. after that it gives me only 800x600 & 640x480. like i didnīt know what i want...
so, i pico and become happy.
i urge people to try the debian way, but i must remind there are other options available if it fails.
Remember, the resolution is not arbitrary, is a combination of the video card memory, monitor's frequencies, etc, you HAVE to follow instructions, you are either missing a step, or giving erroneous info, have you asked yourself: why are you the only one who has problems with this?
i donīt have to follow any instructions. nor do i have any problem. i came here to offer a quickīn dirty solution.
i donīt mind if my config is not made by a script. if it works, i can move on.
manual editing has worked every single time i have tried it. with fedora, slackware and debian (some with tft, some with crt, some with nvidia, some with ati, some with integrated, some with 16:10, some with 4:3). thatīs why i donīt bother to ponder where the problem lies. i just pico the resolutions and refresh rates i want my system to use. and it works every time.
