Question Characters are boxes in Gnome 3

Hello all,
I recently upgraded to Wheezy (with a fresh install, but keeping my /home/* ) and I ended up with Gnome 3 which I don't particulary like, but anyways.

I have some custom ttf fonts in /usr/local/share/fonts and I had no problem using them in Gnome 2 in Squeeze or even with Slackware. I copied the files and updated the font cache but now the characters appear as boxes when using said fonts.

I read that this happens when X can't find the right character for the code using the locale. I never modified my locale. I'm italian (and I use and italian keymap) but I like my system to speak English. This is my locale -a:
Code:
C
C.UTF-8
en_US.utf8
it_IT@euro
it_IT.iso885915@euro
it_IT.utf8
POSIX
I'll attach a snapshot of the desktop, just to clarify.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks.

Open you settings and go to Language Preferences or Language Support. Set everything back to English. Go to your keyboard settings now and change you keyboard to an Italian setup. Your computer will be set to English but you should be able to type Italian.

Thank you derekpock, but my problem's the squares in place of the characters. My language and keymap are just fine.

Ok, sorry, misread your question there. Have you checked for updates? Are there any "updates" or versions for this font? Did you create this font yourself?

Hi again,
no it's a bunch of .ttf files I always used since times past (around 2000 I think) and never got problems with it. I try to keep my system up-to-date with aptitude and such, so I don't think it's an update problem.

Can you use these fonts on anything else or is it just the terminal that it will not work. Most terminal fonts can be used elsewhere. Also, can you be sure when you upgraded that these fonts are still on your computer. They may have been removed during upgrade. Check where you install these fonts. Its very possible that the font is still listed but it does not exist.

Is it only the Microknight font that shows up as boxes? It seems to be an old Amiga font, right? I notice you have a Liberation font. Does that display ok?
