Changing terminal colors

While using Slackware I got used to having the terminal display different file types in different colors(directories in blue and binaries in green for example). Now that I've switched over to Debian I find that having everything in gray/white all of the time is not only hard on the eyes but almost hypnotic in a stupifying sort of manner.

How do I set up the terminal to display different file types as different colors?

Well, what I did was set up an alias for "ls" as "ls --color" in my .bashrc file.

Theres a better way, but I forget it, and that seems to work.

alias ls="ls --color" in ~/.bashrc
