/boot/grub/grub.conf

Debian seems to be missing this file. I read an article ( linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/6206/1/ ) about using a terminal as a desktop and I need to alter grub.conf to change the resolution. Is it done differently in debian?

grub.conf isn't a real file that grub uses the file your looking for is /boot/grub/menu.lst

Some distros for reasons of there own either alter grub, or symlink the menu.lst file to other things ( Redhat used to symlink /etc/grub.conf for instance ). Which is why intructions on grub can be confusing.

I actually assumed this at first, but nothing changed when I altered the file. I'll keep tinkering with it. Thanks for the help.

There is an update-grub script which updates the section in the menu.lst file with the double commented options and the kernels it finds on disk. Your changes to grub kernel lines will be wiped out if you type inside the "automagic" section and run the script.

Have a look at the kernel options to make sure you have framebuffer turned on. I don't do (true) Debian, but this Ubuntu has the config file in /boot. Grep it for fb - and maybe console and frameb.
If you can't find a config, maybe look for /proc/config.gz; you can zcat that to see what's what.
