Blank screen on startx, etch

IBM Thinkpad t22
S3 Savage video driver

I have been having some intense problems getting any kind of debian to run reliably on my computer. The most intense one is that I have been running into a black screen when I type startx. I can't ctl+alt+F2 or ctl+alt+backspace or anything like that, the computer just freezes up altogether.

On my first few debian installs I would have this problem right from boot, see my other post,

My other post is here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=449649

however, following the instrctions given in post #32 here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=426128&page=3

allowed me to get X working for a few days.

Things were going fine until when I started up my computer this morning and startx gave my a blank screen. It was working last night and I didn't change anything.

This might help:

ryan@RyanComputer:/$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device
(EE) Synaptics Touchpad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Synaptics Touchpad"

As far as I know the (EE)s about the touchpad have always been showing up since I have always had the stuff about the touchpad in my Xorg.conf file, even when X was working.

I am really really confused about what is going on here...

Try add this option to your video card section of your xorg.conf:

Option "AGPMode" "2"

It worked for me.
