I'm running debian unstable and recently I've noticed problems with several games, namely starfighter, tuxracer, and blobwars (and probably a few others I haven't tried). When I run the game all that pops up is a black screen and the mouse pointer changes shape. This is usually in fullscreen mode, so I can't switch to anything else running. Starting a new console login works, so the system isn't frozen. Checking the process shows its not taking up any CPU cycles, but I can't kill it, not with any signal, not even as root. It's not changing PIDs or anything, just refusing to die. I thought this was just a fullscreen problem, but today I noticed the same behavior with blobwars which opens in a window. I can move and minimize this titleless window fine but still can't kill it in any way so right now its stuck taking up my taskbar space. Even weirder was I tried to start a second copy from a terminal emulator (to check for any error messages that might give me a clue) and blobwars started up fine! I don't even need to run from a terminal, the only requirement seems to be the dead copy still open. Anybody have the same problem or any ideas what's causing this weird behavior? I'm getting a little worried about these undead processes!
Thanks
