apt-get how to cancel partially installed kernel package?

I have made an error in upgrading my Debian Sarge installation.
I compiled a kernel package but did not give it a unique name.
Now apt-get upgrade is trying to "upgrade" my kernel!

I have cancelled the install:

1 not fully installed or removed.

However, now I want to hold the package that is installed. I have tried this using dselect but apt-get does not seem to pay attention.
Is there a way to prevent apt-get from installing over my kernel?

Thanks

try aptitude. Go in, hit '/' to open the search, and search for the name of the package. Then hit 'h' when that package is found. This should register it as hold. Then try 'apt-get update' and see what happens.
