Wow, that's a pretty bad laptop. I've got Fedora running on my 400mhz, 256 meg, 4gig laptop and it runs just fine
Its a 120 mhz, 64 mb, 1.2 gb laptop circa 1996. I have Mandrake running on a 200 mhz mmx, 128 mb, 3 gb - this is about Mandrake's lower limit. I also have Mandrake running on a p4 2.4 ghz, 256 mb rdram, 80 gb and that on rocks!!! My wife has Win XP on a p4, 2.4 ghz, 512 mb rdram, 150 gb. I can't wait to get my evil paws on that one!!! They are all linked via Samba 2.2.8a. The printer is shared off of my p4.
