DSL on a 486SX.

System configuration:
486SX-33
No HD
8MB RAM
Floppy and CD-ROM drives

I have successfully been able to boot into DOS from a floppy and then start DSL.

However it says there is no math coprocessor or no math emulation present. I am wondering, am I able to get a piece of software for DOS to emulate the math processor?

As far as I am aware, no. The math coprocessor is another chip. Suggestion: unless your mobo has another socket for a coprocessor the chances are that you can simply drop in a 486DX CPU.

To get one may be the problem but you might find one at your friendly computer shop or from a friend who strips PCs before dumping them or even from your IT dept at work.

However, before you do this check your mobo specs - if you don't have the manual you may be able to google for it.

If you can find a coprocessor the part number is 80487SX.
Without a coprocessor you will need to recompile the kernel to enable math emulation.
However, this requires kernel source code.

I understand that Linux is open source. But what you say is contradicting what I know.
Perhaps I am mistaken in the beleif that Linux is COMPLETELY open source, and instead everything but the kernal is.

Although I did read somewhere that a kernal can be recompiled...

Yes, the kernel is open source, but you have to download the source to recompile it, ie it's optional.

You need the Kernel source and Kernel Headers packages as well as compilers.

This will have to be on another PC as you need a Hard Disc to save the files and run the compilation.

For starters have a look at the Kernel Howto which is available from lots of sites.

And here it is:

My fault that I didn't provide a decent explanation.
