confused and curious

I am very interested in becoming a full time dsl user but I haven't been able to access the forums after registering as well. I understand this may be because it's all on a volenteer basis and they haven't had time yet. That's fine. I'll wait, but until then are there people here who answer new users questions? Like how come when I logout from dsl, my "mydsl" program is no longer there when I hook back up? I have the Official DSL book and I have spent hours pouring over wikis and un-accessible forums trying to find out some basic answers. All the answers in the book and online speak as if the new user has a pretty good understanding of Bash. Well, that's not the case here. I'm going thru the Linux.org beginner lessons and have bought the Linux phrasebook but I'm still not finding polite answers. The more I look and the more I frequent forums, the more I realize that all is not answered in the FAQ's and using the search function. So is this the place for help or not?

Nice and quick. Thanks for the response. So how 'bout it? How do I save my downloaded "mysql" files? I have downloaded Python 2.5 five times but it disappears.

Are you using DSL as a live cd or did you install it on to the hard disk?

I'm using it as a live cd with a usb pen drive as a place to store my settings. I haven't figured out how to put it on the usb yet either. The directions are meant for someone obviously more intelligent that I am. That's my next question by the way.

No it didn't answer my question. At all. I have no idea how to use this Emelfm. It looks great. It looks like it could be really effective. I'm excited that its open source and I have it on DSL. But I've stared at it, punched buttons, looked up help for it, gone to the book store and looked. No idea. I'm usually pretty good at figuring this stuff out. I think I'll list some of my issues here and see what happens.

1- Download jwm themes, activate them, and they save no problem. Download Python 2.5 and can activate it until I shut off. Then when I turn it back on, Python is gone.

2- I am saving all my settings on a usb, thankfully they all save automatically. I understand how sda1 mounts/unmounts. Can't get DSL to load/boot off usb. When I use the automatic usb-hdd install on the menu it goes and goes, then just when it looks like it's happy and about done, it hesitates, then shuts off like it was never there.

3- Where is the documentation on the change of the DSL bash commands and normal documented bash commands? I've taken an online course at Linux, and bought a few books and magazines and tried a lot of commands that the DSL cli doesn't recognize. Is there a list somewhere of the differences? I know Bash familiarity is going to be key in learning this new OS and all the rest of Linux OS distros.

4- Oh that's enough for now...

DSL is a mini distro so it doesn't have all the usual commands. It uses busybox instead
