Fresh Bodhi install, speakers aren't working, but headphones work

Just installed bodhi 5.1.0 on my pc. The speakers i've connected don't work at all. My headphones, however, work perfectly fine. i've checked alsamixer and pavucontrol, everything looks fine. any ideas?

Do you have more than 1 physical output? More than 1 mixer?

Sorry if this sounds patronising but did you unplug the headphones before testing the speakers? A lot of motherboards mute the back audio when headphones are plugged in at the front.
