Red Router

Posted 01-26-2011 at 09:46 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I've just obtained a new router from my ISP after the older one started to have problems. The new one is bigger and uglier, but shares the same webUI.

On the previous router a portscan revealed port 23 for telnet was available, but the router just refused my connection when I tried to connect to it. The newer router only reports two open ports, and they are both for net traffic:

Screen 'not connected'? Where's the PVA...

Posted 01-26-2011 at 09:34 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

My screen on my Thinkpad 600 recently died and I believe its backlight has finally given way. While troubleshooting the problem I discovered some very interesting things about my Thinkpad.

It all started with the Thinkpad 600 hardware maintenance manual which I found on the web after a brief google. It contained key combinations that allowed me to access advanced information in the 'Simple' BIOS.

Posted 01-06-2011 at 11:50 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

Currently I am following in the footsteps of Motho ke otho ka botho ( kmandla.wordpress.com ) and running Linux on older hardware. The experience of leaving the confines of Xorg and entering the world of framebuffer are fascinating at the least. Every now and then something goes wrong on the computer, but the culprit is always easily identifiable as the hardware of my now thirteen year old Thinkpad 600.

Long ago, when I first tried Linux on the device I took the wrong route for...

Who needs a radio when I have a computer?

Posted 12-27-2010 at 08:31 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I've been trying to record sound on my laptop for the past few days without decent results.

When first recording with the internal mike there was a decent amount of white noise in the background. I put this down to the mounting of the internal mike inside a device with many moving and vibrating components ( eg my fan and harddrive ). Audacity's noise removal filter did a good job but left me with some ugly artifacts that did not suit my needs.

Now I've tried an...

The permissions are strong in this one...

Something to warm the hearts of fellow crawlers living at the prompt:

$ rm carebear.cute
rm: cannot remove `carebear.cute': Permission denied
$ choke -f carebear.cute

The year 'of the desktop' ( insert opensarcasmmark here ) is nearly over. Hope to see where unity and the gnome shell are taking us.
