Pimping my fluxbox

Posted 08-27-2011 at 04:02 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

Fluxbox is my favourite windowmanager for a number of reasons, but its default looks are not one of them. The included styles are mostly horrible and the default menu system in the Debian build has its problems.

I know of two decent sources of fluxbox themes:
Unfortunately both sources are dated - it seems the fad of creating themes for window-managers ended a few years ago. Nevertheless...

Libreoffice needs change

Posted 07-07-2011 at 12:11 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice are massive ( and possibly monolithic ) suites of software. In some ways this makes them just as bad as Microsoft office, but they gain back their credit for being designed with user priority over commercial priority. I love being able to use a fully featured office suite that is more than a match for Microsoft Office, but most of the time I try to avoid having to use the suite because it is large, slow and sometimes unwieldy.

Once again we are shown Microsoft knows how to fix their operating system, but chooses not to

Microsoft has just released version 2 of their free Security Essential antimalware suite. In the comments, people are praising how 'Great it is', how 'Microsoft is getting it right' and 'Linux sucks because no one makes an equivalent to this'.

Listen to me, you have all been lead.

I've tried to write up my criticisms of Open/Libre office before, but have never found the time. Today I have. and here they are:
  • The suites try to look, feel and operate as similiar to Microsoft Office as possible. This is a big failure. Try a new, streamlined approach that does not drag MS crap with it.
  • The suites have too many features that no one uses. Provide things as plugins instead.

Debian & Fglrx

Posted 11-05-2010 at 07:42 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I've decided to change from Ubuntu to Debian Testing again, after a bad encounter with the Ubuntu updater. Long story short, I did not know it was going to take 4+ hours to update from 10.04 to 10.10, and when I was informed, I just killed the system power in disgust.

Anyway, as with every system I've had on this laptop ( an Acer Aspire 5536 ) I've discovered why I will never buy ATI/AMD graphics hardware again. You have two driver options - xserver-radeon and fglrx.
