Dumping the Desktop Environment

Updated 07-04-2011 at 01:11 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Categories)

A while ago I started using a proper desktop environment ( as opposed to independent window managers ). I did this with the false beliefs that it would make my life easier and that it would encourage more of my friends to try out free operating systems when they saw me using my computer.

Slowly I realised this was not true. Then I read this, and it sealed my fate:

Criticisms of Open/Libre office and what I'd like a document processor to be like

I've tried to write up my criticisms of Open/Libre office before, but have never found the time. Today I have. and here they are:
  • The suites try to look, feel and operate as similiar to Microsoft Office as possible. This is a big failure. Try a new, streamlined approach that does not drag MS crap with it.
  • The suites have too many features that no one uses. Provide things as plugins instead.

MEGAkill - the process anihilator

Posted 08-28-2010 at 02:52 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)
Updated 08-28-2010 at 03:05 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Spelling error - captial > capital)

I'm always fed up when I have to grep through ps -A output or stare at top for ages, trying to find the name or pid of a hung process. Finally today I decided to end my woes with this shell script:

Description
MEGAkill is a shell script that automates the locating of processes by their name before asking the user if they want to kill them.

Usage: megakill keywordofprocess [ signal to send ]

The script greps the output of ps -A and then checks...

Better than an xmessage choice window

Posted 04-23-2010 at 08:05 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

Regarding my earlier post about .xinit scripts

This is my current setup, probably a better option. I simply pass options as what I want to execute or just run startx without any options for my normal session including window manager.

Code:
#!/bin/sh

# Anything to run only once and beforehand
xmodmap "/home/whales/.Xmodmap"
xbattbar -s acpi_xbattbar -t 3 &
~/script/shell/dayfortune &

if [ -z $1 ]

Connecting your computer to a stereo system

Posted 04-18-2010 at 07:33 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)
Updated 04-18-2010 at 07:41 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Finished off post)

My computer has output jacks for only the TRS standard audio plug. My 20 year old amplifier only has input jacks for the RCA red and white plugs ( same as the the red and white of the red, white, yellow combo for televisions).

Without going to the shops and buying a new adapter cord or device, I reminded myself both rely on the exact same technology. Upon splitting the cords, this was confirmed.
