SuSE Linux 7.3 in VirtualBox
Two days before Windows XP hit sales, SuSE Linux 7.3 was released on October 23, 2001.
The default KDE setup for this and the next SuSE Linux release were probably the greenest interfaces that the distribution has ever seen. There appears to be significant attention and improvement in the default user interface in the overall color scheme and icon theme. GNOME saw neither an upgrade nor significant changes in this release. By this release, the default boot screen had more sophisticated animations and eye candy than most modern Linux distribution boot screens. I also noticed that the Mozilla Browser was included by default, the predecessor to Firefox.
SuSE Linux 7.3 is the last release to include the classic YaST1 that reigned before YaST2 took over in SuSE Linux versions 6.3 and 6.4. YaST2 at this point offers the functionality of the previous YaST1, and does not appear significantly different in scope and design from today's YaST2.
To get the best graphics possible in 7.3, I had to boot from the SuSE Linux 8.0 net install CD, abort any attempt to install SuSE Linux again, then go to start Installation/System, select Boot Installed System, and type in my root partition. Mine was "/dev/hda4". I made sure to run SaX2 again to get the graphics running properly. As well, I set the default runlevel to 3, so that I could log in as root and run "kdm" since I could not figure out how to change the default display manager from xdm to kdm. After setting the OS to Linux kernel 2.4 in the VirtualBox New VM wizard, there were little hiccups with set up and installation beyond graphics setup.
