Old SUSE Linux in VBox

Posted 05-11-2012 at 08:25 PM by wagscat123
Updated 05-11-2012 at 08:27 PM by wagscat123

I've ran and test SUSE 7.1 and 7.3 and later in VirtualBox. Here's some notes about each
-2001-
7.1 - Offers KDE 1.1 and 2.0 and Kernel 2.2/2.4. GNOME 1.2. Only 640x480 with 16 colors with XFree86 4. Includes as both Sax1 and SaX2 and Yast1 and YaST2. You may have to fight the sound server, but it works well once you have it fired up. This is the only one older than 9.2 I installed from an Install CD instead of an FTP server.
7.3 - KDE 2.2 and GNOME 1.4. Same video resolution and...

The Great GNOME Schism

Posted 02-10-2012 at 10:31 PM by wagscat123

I personally switched back to KDE in wake of 12.1 approaching over the summer. GNOME 3 isn't too bad for me, just different and weird, and if was tweaked a little might be good. In the past,
(starting with KDE 2.5\GNOME 2.16) I've bounced around between the two and have voted differently over the years. I've always used SUSE though.
Comparing LQ Members Choice Awards this year to last year, there seems to be a Great Schism in GNOME. KDE has kept about the same amount of votes, while...

Christmas Computer

Posted 01-06-2012 at 07:53 PM by wagscat123

Ahh... for Christmas I got a new computer

My old computer was a 2005 Dell Dimension B110 with 32-bit 2.53 GHz Celeron 256 MB (upgraded to 1.2) RAM, 40GB (160 GB) and a CD RW (upgraded to a DVD-RW drive) drive. Those specs probably bring back memories of computer history. I remember freaking because it didn't have a floppy drive.
That computer could only virtualize Linuxes before 2008, couln't run 8 preview, barely ran 7, and could barely run openSUSE 12.1 with desktop effects....

openSUSE 12.1 GNOME Clean-Up

Posted 11-22-2011 at 06:22 PM by wagscat123
Updated 11-22-2011 at 06:27 PM by wagscat123

Even though there technically is no connection between the releases in the 11.x series, I'm still very happy to see 12.x out now. (11.0-11.4 all had been under Novell, used KDE4 by default and used GNOME 2)

Something I've learned about openSUSE 12.1:

1. To imitate GNOME 3 as much as possible
Unlike previous changes to the GNOME default look, it is impossible to bring GNOME 100% back to the way to was before. However, you can make it look much more similar.

The Bright and Dark Future of Linux

Posted 10-22-2011 at 10:47 PM by wagscat123

Hello,

Fairly recently I've really been learning about the Linux community and the "human part" if you will of the GNU\Linux world, from the businesses like Canonical, SUSE, and Red Hat to the Debian social contract and LSF. Also, I've read up on the future of Desktops and Handhelds and examined Linux Desktop distros from the deep past (remember DemoLinux?)
Twenty years ago Linux Tarvalds started the Linux kernel. At first, it was "nothing big" and was simply...
