Dell Latitude D620

Posted 04-13-2016 at 09:59 PM by shsmith

Hey all,
I got the power supply for the Latitude on Saturday. Nice that it was early, but they didn't send me the one I ordered. However, the one they sent does work, so I'm not gonna complain. The bios does not recognize that a battery is installed, so I guess that is next on the list to purchase. I also want to eventually up the ram to 4GB and get a 1TB hard drive for it. Currently it has 1GB of ram and a 60GB hard drive. I went ahead and put Fedora 23 on it, and it seems to be running...

My Network

Posted 04-06-2016 at 02:09 PM by shsmith

For those of you who may be interested, my home network consists of a desktop running Ubuntu 14.04LTS, a dell Inspiron E1505 running Linux Mint 17.3 with Cinnamon and XFCE desktops, and a Sony Vaio laptop running windows 7. The Latitude will be added once I get the power supply and figure out what to put on it. For once, the windows was the easiest to configure; I'm catching hell trying to get the Linuxes to play nice and see and work with each other.

New(ish) Laptop :s

Ok, dealing with that latitude, trying to get the dvd rom working under windows (xp) have been futile. Windows says there are no drivers (even though I can navigate right to where they are) and won't let me install any. On a hunch I made a bootable Puppy Linux ISO on a thumb drive and booted from it. The DVD ROM works fine! So now I have to decide what Linux distro I want to put on that laptop. I ordered a power supply for it and one for the Inspiron and they should be here by close of business...

Open SuSE

Posted 03-31-2016 at 12:22 PM by shsmith

If you read my last blog entry, you know that I was having problems with the old computer that I just installed Open SuSE on. Well, I got the RAM problem sorted out. I went to my neighbor's house to take care of a windows problem for him and when I came back, there was a funny smell. And it was coming out of the power supply for that computer. So, it looks like the fun continues...

Honestly, that tower is the first one I built, vintage around 2001. So I really can't complain...

New (ish) Laptop :s

Posted 03-30-2016 at 04:04 PM by shsmith

So, someone showed up at my house this morning with a laptop they had dug out of the trash (why are they always in the trash?) and asked me if I could use it. It is a Dell (why are they always Dell?) Latitude D620. Missing the power supply (what's new) and is still running windows xp. I used another power supply to get it booted and took a look at it. All personal files had been removed from it. What they left were the annoying browser bars (a lot of them) and viruses(hundreds!!). It has a couple...
