I'm gathering data for running BLDC motor using my Odroid U3 Shield I/O.

First question what is a BLDC motor.

A BLDC motor is a Brushless Direct Current Motor meaning that the electromagnet coils are static but its the magnetic rotor that rotates.

It has many advantages to the motor used in toys and other types, but its complexity arises from the circuitry needed to drive this type of motor.

I have scraped some hard disks and optical drives to extract the BLDC motor.

From the few I have seen, all of them needed three pins to implement a three phase input to the motor, some had a signal output whereas the rest had Hall sensor/s to detect the position of the rotor.

A few things are needed to run the BLDC motor, 3 PWM outputs, one or more ADC inputs.

And these are readily available in the Odroid U3 Shield IO.

But care has to be taken so that the motor does not burn the Shield, via the basis of inductive kicking.
