Wheezy annoyances

Well, since Wheezy officially came out a couple of weeks ago, I decided to upgrade my squeeze install this weekend. Upgrading worked pretty well overall, but I'm left with a bunch of little annoyances that leave me wondering if I should just put up with them or reinstall. I'm wondering if anyone out there has fixed any of these.

Gnome 3 was a bit of a surprise. Luckily it was easy to enable classic mode for my work user. My home user is learning to deal with the new interface but...

More Ben Nanonote

Posted 07-06-2012 at 04:08 PM by drask

I'm still playing with my nanonote. I still have not successfully managed to get Debian installed on it, but I did manage to install jLime, which is supposed to provide the best initial user experience, but I found it frustrating and went back to the default OpenWRT operating system. jLime kept complaining that the filesystem had not been unmounted cleanly and running e2fsck every time I tried to start it up, which I could fix but didn't feel like I should have to. The command line was also more...

Find and Prune

Posted 07-06-2012 at 01:05 PM by drask

Okay, I've been frustrated with the prune option of the find command for a long time. I have a folder in my home directory called "mount" where I have directories onto which I mount the foreign filesystems I work with on a regular basis. I often know that there is a file containing a word or phrase that I need to find, and it is somewhere in my home directory. I've been trying to use prune to skip searching that particular folder, especially when grepping for something inside a file. For...

Ben Nanonote

Posted 06-14-2012 at 09:46 AM by drask

For fun I bought a Ben Nanonote the other day and am slowly starting to play with it as time permits. I'm listing the things I have discovered about it so far.

I purchased a small usb network dongle that was listed as linux and Windows 7 compatible and a mini-b to type a usb converter to try and get wireless networking working with this, but it looks like that's going to be more of a project than I anticipated. The USB port is a client only port (an inny, not an outy) so it can be...

Why does my answering machine want to know what year it is?

Posted 05-25-2012 at 02:52 PM by drask

This is completely off topic, but I've been wondering about it for a while. The last few times I have bought an answering machine, it wants me to set the date so it can announce the day and time when the call was received, a very helpful feature. Then it wants to know the year. So it knows the day of the week, hour, minute, and year. Why does it want to know the year? I mean, if it knew the date and month, then it could do useful things like adjusting for daylight savings time. But as it is, it...
