Netgear WG311 PCI Wireless Network Adapter on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala
I recently purchased a recertified Netgear WG311 PCI Wireless Network Adapter from TigerDirect.com http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...?Sku=N100-1487because my LinkSys USB adapter has become quite cranky lately, and requires several hours of cool-down time between uses (and apparently leaving it in the USB port when the computer is off allows enough power to trickle through it to prevent it from cooling down, so you have to unplug it when shutting off the computer if you want to be able to use it next time you start the machine up again).
I figured Netgear was an established company, and this was an old product, so it should work with Linux without a problem.
Unfortunately, there don't appear to be any native linux drivers for this card, so Ubuntu Koala didn't just pick it up like I expected it to. Darn, I've gotten spoiled by Ubuntu just working.
So I get out my cranky old adapter again and install ndiswrapper:
Then I go to the Netgear website to download the windows drivers and discover there are three different versions of this card with three different chipsets and incompatible drivers. The version number is supposedly written on the card, but rather than crawl back under my desk, take apart the computer and get the version off the card, I decided to just try the three versions in order and use the one that works. I used ndisgtk (System->Administration->Windows Wireless Drivers) to try the first two, and both times the GUI reported that the device was not present. The third version had a new style driver and did not include an INF file for ndiswrapper to hook to.
After some looking around, I found instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...tgear_WG311_v3 and downloaded version 1 of the version 3 driver which does include an INF file:
This one finally worked.
