My birthday presents
So, I turned 29 on 18th Feb 2012. Thought of presenting
myself with the toys I was longing for quite a while.
Owned Canon PowerShot SX210 IS for about two years.
That camera produces horrible outputs in low light.
No wide apertures. Horrible noise at ISO 200.
I was discouraged. Discouraged to the level that I had
totally abandoned photography (literally).
People often told me that the crap photos can be safely
edited in the GIMP. Not being a GIMP girl, I do NOT support
the idea of spending seconds on the camera and then hours
on GIMP. IMO, photography is about using the brain, then
using the camera, and last of all the GIMP.
Two years back, I still remember, I was under an impression
that if the camera is expensive, it'll automatically
produce brilliant pictures at one click!
I was impressed by the 14MP and 14x optical zoom of the
Canon PowerShot. Couldn't realize in the shop that all that
glitters is not gold!!
I am changed person now. I am indebted to the regulars of
photo.stackexchange for leading me from darkness to light!
Also, 1x.com has truly been "extremely" inspiring for me.
Many photographs there are the live examples of the fact
that photography is NOT limited just to landscapes and wild
life! Posting in the critique section there has increased my
vision greatly!
I am back to life.
Did I forget to mention that I successfully made the delicious
carrot cake and the banana cake? :-)
Now I have got to experiment with the camera as well as the oven.

I agree that using Gimp to try and repair bad photos is usually a bad idea. I love to use Gimp to alter photos such as removing Power lines and poles from the photo.
My Canon experience has been that they make good equipment but in order to get it you must pay about 2 to 3 times as much as other brands and they do not support linux.Posted 03-03-2012 at 09:05 AM by Larry Webb -
D3100 should be a great choice. I'm D5100 user myself, but I often think I payed a serious value from it for software (imaginary features, that any hardware can provide).
To be precise I don't see any reason to upgrade from it to any other DSLR ever. Those who want excessively high quality use large-format film cameras, perhaps. These models like 3100 and 5100 should be a borderline for most of photographers: buying a newer devices usually means no serious hardware improvements, only addition of part of features that older models lack. And for that, you pay a great value.
Go forward, learn and share your pics. Photography is a lots of funPosted 03-03-2012 at 03:55 PM by Web31337

Two things I majorly liked about D3100 are - it being "extremely" light and its high ISO performance.
And the 50mm 1.8G is creating magics.
I am very pleased with the current setup.
Only problem is the mirror slap. The D3100 doesn't have the mirror lockup facility. Mirror slap causes the shake.Posted 03-13-2012 at 07:05 AM by Aquarius_Girl -

Since I have started with D3100 and the pretty 1.8G prime lens, surprisingly, I have started liking my photographs (somewhat).

I've 50mm 1.8D (no autofocus on my cam), yes, it's pretty good.
There is no gallery or anything yet (bc there isn't much to show but if you're interested): http://air.oldstable.org/Posted 04-01-2012 at 08:27 PM by Web31337 -

I forgive you, Ani. Thanks. I didn't log into LQ on the 13th, so I would have missed it. You can stop banging your head now.

Are you near that limit?
What are the practical options after the limit is crossed?
It is said that replacing shutter costs half the price of the camera!Posted 08-24-2012 at 06:15 AM by Aquarius_Girl
