I've been attempting to install Arch Linux 0.5 for a week or so. The install seems to go fine but when I finish and reboot, the bootloader does not load. Once, I even got the "Operating system not found" error. During the bootloader section of the install, I chose lilo and even tried Grub. I checked the confuration of each before finishing the install and everything looked good (I could be wrong, though). I'm running a Thinkpad T30 and Thinkpad T23. The T30 is using a Radeon 7500 video card and the T23 is using a SuperSavage card. I'm having the same issues with both machines. I'm really wanting to try Arch Linux but this is starting to drive me nuts.
I also posted this information on the Arch Linux site but we just couldn't get it figured out.
Make sure that the partition you installed on has the boot flag set to true. Also, some BIOSES only support a bootable partition in the first parts of the hd.
It's correct if hda1 is where your '/' (root) partition is...perhaps you have a /boot and /usr partition as well.
If you explain what partion(s) you installed Arch on (or are trying to...) we may be able to help with your grub or lilo .conf file, as this seems to be where the trouble is stemming from.
install arch using all defaults. aka let the isntaller create the file system. Only install the base packages, the standard ide kernel, dont change anything in the config, just open and close the files so you can go through the rest of the install. Install grub and see if you can boot.
