You can use the tee command to append stdout and stderr command output to a file while still writing to the terminal.

Example:

Code:
ftp ftpserver.example.com 2>&1 | tee -a ftplog.txt
You'll get all the normal output at your terminal, and a copy in file ftplog.txt.
