Post Decompress *.tar.tar files

Hi All

I am currently working on an installation of compressed file in *.tar.tar extension which keeps throwing some error without extracting. The file '*.tar.gz' was downloaded from a site to Windows XP and moved to a server's root folder using ftp protocol. Later, i find the file converted into '*.tar.tar' under root folder.

Steps taken :

1. Tried moving into the same location by changing compression format like :

mv qt-x11-commercial-src-4.3.3.tar.tar qt-x11-commercial-src-4.3.3.tar.gz
also, tried qt-x11-commercial-src-4.3.3.tar.tar qt-x11-commercial-src-4.3.3.tar.bz2 etc.

2. On executing : gunzip qt-x11-commercial-src-4.3.3.tar.gz it throws :

incomplete literal tree

gunzip: qt-x11-commercial-src-4.3.3.tar.gz: invalid compressed data--format violated.

Not sure how to proceed with extracting the files to set up an environment. FYI, I am able to open to see all the files i downloaded in windows with winRAR.

Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Its possible the file wasn't transferred properly. You could do an ls -l and compare the file size on the linux box with the one on the XP machine. See if it matches.
Did you set mode to binary before ftp'ing the file?

You need to check what file format actually you've got there. Use
Code:
file yourarchivename
to examine whether it's a tarball or zipped tarball or maybe something else..

To Answer your questions :

File sizes were both the same on Windows and Unix when compared. I typed 'bin' which said something like '200 Type set to I.' though, I got to check it again.

file filearchivename gave : 'tar.gz' (.gz)

For now, I have extracted the file using WinRAR on windows and copied the file to Unix server using FTP via windows explorer. If I happen to face any issues on working with these compressed file, I will let you know for assistance.

Thanks a lot for all your response!!.
