ne0 not configured

I just installed NetBSD about 2 hours ago and I'm trying to get the internet up and running but I'm running into problems.
Using the doc http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/network/pppoe/ I'm trying to setup a permanent connection. Unfortunately, I'm stuck at the point where you bring up the ne0 interface. I did what the doc said...
Code:
ifconfig ne0 up
and got
Code:
ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS ne0: device not configured
I don't understand. What do I have to do to configure it?
Thank you for your time,
Kyle

try
ifconfig ne0 192.168.0.1

You need to configure the interface to bring it up, i.e. give it an IP address an optionally specify a netmask, broadcast, etc.

I get the same error trying to configure eth0.

No matter what I type relating to eth0, I get that error.

# ifconfig eth0 16.113.38.149
ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS eth0: Device no configured

I still do not understand why people keep using ppp dialers? I know it does not help you right now to solve the current problem with your pppoe, but just wanted to share some xp. I also had constant headaches with dialers when I could not take any longer and asked ISP to provide me DHCP. Now my server runs on FreeBSD and all network configuration cost me just choosing the DHCP at SYSINSTALL

lyonsd, either you're referencing the wrong driver, or you're in the wrong forum. This is a BSD forum and none of the BSD OSs use the generic "ethN" style that Linux uses. In BSD OSs (except Mac OS), a device is configured by the driver name and instance, i.e. an Intel Pro/100 driver would be fxp, so the first Pro/100 device would be fxp0, the next fxp1, etc. A 3COM card usually uses the xl driver, so xl0, xl1, etc...

If you're really using Linux and not BSD, then you should post your question in the Linux - Networking forum (this is the *BSD Forum).
