The biggest difference between FreeBSD and Linux is that the development of FreeBSD is far more monolithic than that of GNU/Linux. GNU/Linux, on the other hand, is developed in a far more distributed
(and anarchic) fashion. Note that I refer to GNU/Linux - what we are referring to is a combination of the Linux kernel and GNU utilities.

If you have a Unix background, you'll probably be quite happy with either. If you don't, Linux/GNU may be your best bet.

If you have a specific requirement to go with a more focused, less diverse, development environment, BSD would probably be choice.

If you application is not demanding of anything specific other than "Unix on a PC" or "Anything but Windows", Linux has the advantage of the vast community of users and developers, including support and development from some very large corporations (IBM for example).

You could always set up a machine to dual-boot with both systems - this way you may find a personal favourite.

When there is a thread that says Important: Read This Before Posting you should probably Read it Before Posting. That way you will avoid making silly mistakes, like asking a very common question that is answered already

Just in case you missed my subtle link, here you go.
