FreeBSD GUI and Net Installer

I have a few quick questions about FreeBSD. What graphic environments does FreeBSD support? Does it have KDE and Gnome?

Is there a web installer for FreeBSD? If so, where is it and what should the ISO file be named? I looked on the FreeBSD FTP mirrors for an ISO and couldn't find one but maybe I didn't know what I was looking for.

Also, does Apt-get run on FreeBSD?

yes, it has both available. plus a million other desktop environments and window managers available through the ports.

do you mean you want to do a ftp install? you can do this with the regular install cds. just go to their website and download both regular iso images, burn them, do an install and when it asks for installation media select ftp. i think you can also make an install floppy and do an ftp install as well, but check out their website for that.

for installing applications and upgrading them, you use ports. let's say i wanted to install the program gaim. i would do this:
Code:
su
Password: ******
cd /usr/ports/net/gaim
make install clean
and gaim is installed. let's say they come out with a new version of gaim and i want to update gaim only. i do this:
Code:
su
cd /usr/ports/net/gaim
make deinstall
make reinstall
but you have to have done "cvsup" to the ports to have access to the newest applications. then there's portupgrade and several other million options to getting/installing/updating applications. you can use packages as well if you don't want to compile everything from source.

So are programs like portupgrade GUI frontends similar to Synaptic for Apt-Get?

i don't think there's a gui for portupgrade. it's pretty self explanatory though. just read "man portupgrade" on options at the command line. you basically just type "portupgrade" and whatever options you want after that.
