keyboard problem thinkpad R40e

Hi,

just installed Zenwalk 7.0 on an old IBM Thinkpad R40e and detected a major keyboard problem:

On Xfce num lock seems to be switched on by default, so that u, i, o are displayed as 4, 5, 6 and so on. When I switch the num lock off, neither numbers nor letters get displayed.

On the login screen this problem doesn't exist, here keyboard responds nicely.

Also on the failsafe teminal the keyboard works fine.

I have disabeled num lock in BIOS settings but Xfce seems to ignore that.

I have tried a variety of keyboard layouts but without success.

Does anybody have an idea how to fix this problem?
