Unhappy Need to install to 2 drives. Root on hda and home on hdb. Vector not allowing this.

I have an old P2 that I need to install vector linux on. I have the 'light' version and have tried the 'live' on it and it runs pretty good. My issue is getting the installer to recognize that I want / on hda and /home on hdb. The drives are too small to just use one drive. I have formatted each drive and both are ready. I just can't assign partitions to separate drives. I have googled and tried to find this information but have had no luck. Anyone have any ideas how I can do this? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Do you have enough space on the / drive to create it with /home and then move /home to the second drive? Basically, you just install it to /, then use a live CD to move all the /home files (including the dotfiles) to the 2nd drive. Then change the fstab to point to home on the second drive (I think you have to use chroot to avoid permissions problems on the fstab, but I'm not sure).

Lot of work and time for that.

Well, that might work but it would be trial and error and a lot of time involved. I'd rather throw the thing in the junk pile as waste a lot of time on it. I like how vector runs on it (quick) but it isn't worth a lot of my time. If there is no other way (quicker) then I guess I'll have to try to find another distro. But, thanks for the info.

What version of Vector is it? This link seems to imply that there's a way in the installer to select partitions.

Alternatively, you can leave /home inside / and then just store your data on the second drive. Create a mountpoint like /data and just put it all there.

Yes. That would work. Unfortunately, this computer was to be for a young person who doesn't understand these kinds of things. They have only used MS Win a few times. There are many linux programs for children. That was to be the use for this computer. Also, that link leads to a page I had previously looked at. If you look, it says that there are many drives that can be used and lists them and how they are referenced. But in all the install sections it lists only hda. I'm sure you could install to hdb if hda was microsoft. However, it still wants to use only 1 drive for installation. This would be the perfect OS for this computer if it were not for this issue. As stated, if I can't find a way to easily do this, I will just find a different distro that will install to both drives. I have PCLinuxOS LXDE on it now but it is too slow. Everything about it is too slow. The Vector Live disk operated faster than the installed OS. How crazy is that? =]

If you look at the section "Installation Process Step by Step" and #4, it has a graphic showing the menu where you can select the partition for swap, root, and home.

I had looked at that but I guess not close enough. You were correct. That took care of my issue. Sorry I was so blind. Thanks again.
