Xubuntu Gutsy installation problem

Trying to install Xubuntu Gutsy on an old Toshiba Portege with 128Mb Ram which was running Feisty.
Installed with "alternative" CD and everything looks fine. Remove Cd and boot into new system and great, things work as they should - impressive !

Shutdown and reboot and problems !

System hangs at "searching for hardware drivers" and from then on takes forever to load. When loaded - eventually - system is unresponsive and has video lag. Xorg is correct and has correct driver and screen res.

Any ideas as what could be going wrong ?

I have tried re-installing several times with exactly the same issue of apparently unable to find hardware drivers.

I have reverted to Feisty which runs fine but would like to know why this occurs with Gutsy install.

I have tried reinstalling and running safe mode - like 3 times in all !!!- anyway back to 7.04 without the hassle. I seem to be not alone with these "type" of problems but mine is solved by "going back in time"
