xubuntu grub problem

Hi,

I installed xubuntu 10.4 on a harddisk from one computer. I then removed this disk and wished to use it as the primary, however I cannot boot, and am presented with a "grub_rescue" prompt with an out of disk error.

No commands seems to work at this prompt, and insmod /boot/grub/normal.mod was unsuccusfull.

I figured I should try and reinstall grub, but was unsure how to do so from the live cd.

grub-setup for the device segfaults, and there is no install-grub command...

suggestions?

this will let you boot ubuntu from the grub prompt with grub 2 installed, just fill in the "?" with the correct number.

root (hd0,?)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda?
initrd /initrd.img
boot

grub2 counts drives from zero and partitions from one.

Thanks, I will give that a try later.

My disk was recognized as /dev/sda, and sda1 is the linux partition and sda5 is swap. Sot o modify your commands they wouyld be:

root (sd0,1)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1
initrd /initrd.img
boot

or something else?

this is the correct way:

root (hd0,1)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1
initrd /initrd.img
boot

If you want to try reinstalling grub2 from the live CD, here is how to do it:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD
Don't worry about the "method 2" and "method 3" listed there unless the first example don't work for some reason.

OK, none of those commands worked.

root results in command not found, same as boot etc

will try reinstalling from the live cd

If reinstalling from the live CD does not fix it, work your way through this troubleshooting section from the ubutnu wiki article I linked to earlier:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...LI%20to%20Boot
It is essentially the same as what ColorPurple suggested, but with a more verbose explanation.
