im very new to linux ive just installed ubuntu 9.10 on my lap top works fine, the problem ive got is it will not recognize the usb ive placed in for the wireless mouse (bush am-x270) and my laptop is compaq v4000 any help or ideas of what i should do would be appreciated, thank you
All wireless mice I have used with linux have "just worked"(TM).
Some need to have a little button pressed on both the USB receiver and on the mouse, at the same time so they can "associate" with each other before they work together. Check your mouse-manual.
If this (and a battery change for the mouse) doesn't fix it, please plug in the USB mouse-receiver and tell us the output of lsusb
ive only just bought the mouse today and placed new batteries in the mouse itself, ive tried pressing both the button on the usb and the buttun under the mouse, this seems to be doing nothing, you have mentioned to tell you what the output of isusb is unfortunetley ive only just started using linux this week and have know idea how to check for this, ive got two usb memory sticks that show up on my desktop once inserted, i can also access these from the place-computer tabs but for some reason this usb link to the mouse dosent seem to do anything, how can i check for the output of isusb? sorry i did say im a real novice when it comes to linux
How you press the "Make association" buttons depends on your mouse - read the manual, follow the steps carefully. Obviously, the USB thing needs to be powered up (plugged in and turned on) before you do this.
Some other things to think about: Does the mouse have a power switch? Is it turned on? Are the batteries the right way round? Does the mouse work in another computer?
To see the output of lsusb: Go to your menu thing (at the top), Accessories, Utilities, Terminal (If I'm wrong with these steps (which are from memory, I don't use gnome), just hunt everywhere for Terminal, then click it).
A B&W "Terminal" opens.
Type lsusb into that window.
Press the RETURN key.
[Weird, I know, but ls is short for list and usb is, well USB, so we are asking for a list of what is currently connected to the USB ports.]
Tell us what it says.

the mouse is on all lit up but the usb is not, the instructions for the set up are as follows which ive tried
step 1 connect usb and find new id (this does not show up) on my laptop
step 2 press reset button on mouse
step 3 press reset button on usb
which i have tried i think i need to get the laptop to recognize the usb before i can link the two together?

Thanks for providing the right information.
Your USB mouse-receiver is not showing up at all.
So, I suspect it is broken, even if it is new. Even if it has not associated with the mouse, the receiver should be showing up and it is not.
It would be a good idea to test it in a different USB socket on your laptop (maybe you have a broken socket?), and then on a different computer (maybe one running W....), before you take it back. You did keep the receipt I hope.
ive now tried lsusb with both my memory sticks and the wireless mouse usb and this was the result if this helps anymore

i honestly dont no how to get round this, ive not tried it on another computer because my other computer is having seroius problems at the moment but that is another story, thanks for help
Bus 001 Device 015: ID 090c:1000 Feiya Technology Corp. Flash Drive Is a flash drive. It is recognised. Bus 001 Device 014: ID 0930:6545 Toshiba Corp. Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 Stick (4GB) / PNY Attache 4GB Stick Is another USB thing, and it too, is recognised.
So there's nothing wrong with ubuntu's handling of USB.
I suspect your mouse receiver is broken. Just take it back.
i think that is the best thing to do is take it back as ive tried it in all 4 usb slots to no avail so its back to the shop thank you for help and patience as i am a new to linux, i will post if the new one works and i suppose if it dosent aswell. thanks(i have the receipt)
well i would just like to let you know ive just tried one last time in each port and this was the result, the only think that is different is i have just installed playonlinux, but im glad to say my mouse is working fine thanks for help before

So, what did you change between [3] and [4] to make it work?
i sorry to say i never changed anything this was just the result of plugging in the usb link in each socket and running lsusb,i wish i had then i would know what was up.
