Wireless + linux driver

I'm sure I should be able to find the answer to this by searching, but I've looked so many places without finding the answer, I'll never find all the ones I have and haven't looked at already so please be nice!
I have an old, old laptop and a shiny new Ubuntu disc (yay for ubuntu for mailing them out for free!). I have a linksys wireless card that plugs into the laptop. I downloaded what should be the right driver in linux form (as far as I can tell) and untarred/zipped it.
Ok, now I'm stuck... how do I get the two together??
Everything I'm finding talks about ndiswrapper, I don't think that's what I need if I have a linux driver, is it?

Did not mention the brand, model and version of card?
Didi not mention which driver you are installing?
A link to the driver can help as well?
What does the Readme or Install files from the compressed driver say?
Is there any install docs from the developer of the driver?
Have you check the HCL database here? It is located at the top or to the right. Lots of hardware listed in there.

That was kind of intentional (not naming the specifics), I was hoping that there was a "generic" answer to the question that might be applied other places.
But I did get it working with ndiswrapper, so it's all good. Thanks!
