Wifi overide power shutdown

Hi there,

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome 3 instead of Unity, on a ThinkPad notebook, and I set up the power control so that when I push the power button the notebook will countdown 60sec. to shutdown (how do I skip the countdown ?), then I can simply close the cover and leave it there, this worked fine. Just yesterday I did the same, but only to discover the other day the notebook did not shutdown and waiting for the Wifi password, which I shutdown the router before the notebook is off, I assume the shutdown has priority over any running task, how do I force the shutdown bypass anything else ?
