Why cant I install applications? on Add/Remove Applications

When I try to install a application on Add/Remove... from the Applications menu and I confirm the install I get this error message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

"

Please help.

Did you try doing what the error message suggests?
