Whoops, No Debian! - Grub question

Hi All,

I have winxp on hda,
ubuntu on hde and
debian on hdg.

I ran grub-install (trying to adjust the os order in the boot menu) and whoops! now only winxp and ubuntu are listed. I looked at my /boot/grub/device.map which reads:

(hd0) /dev/hda
(hd1) /dev/hde
(hd2) /dev/hdg

I want to rerun grub so that it sees all three operating systems and creates a brand new boot menu (like it does during a new os install.) Can I do this? Looked online but most tutorials & threads were dealing with rescue issues and boot disks. Seems like there should be a way to just do this from the command line. Thoughts/tips?

Much Appreciated,

dl

From which OS did you run grub-install sounds like ubuntu.
Just edit ubuntu's /boot/grub/menu.lst and add debian to it.

Why not just add Debian back into Grubs /boot/grub/menu.lst?

Boot into Ubuntu, and mount /dev/hdg1 somewhere. Check the correct full names for vmlinuz and initrd.img (On hdg). They will have those names, with a version number as part of the name.

And add the following section to /boot/grub/menu.lst (on Ubuntu):
Code:
title Debian GNU/Linux
root (hd2,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6-xxxx root=/dev/hdg1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6-xxxx
savedefault
boot
Then you should be able to boot Debian properly.

I hope this helps

darklight, you also needn't run grub-install every time you make a change to the GRUB configuration file (unlike LILO).

To change the boot order you merely needed to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.
