I downloaded codecs for restricted media extensions and I copied them to "/usr/lib/codecs" and made soft links to all of these files in "/usr/lib/win32" using "ln -s /usr/lib/codecs/* ." but still
I can't play mp3 and other files in ubuntu 7.10.
Now where have I to put that files?
Where did you get the codecs from? They should be available through the package manager. If you let the package manager, Synaptic, install them, they should work without mucking around. They are called 'win32codecs' on my xubuntu system.
I have downloaded them from the site of MPlayer, it is a .tar.bz2 package with binary codec files, If I know the path that the codecs have to be there, I can simply move them there and make them work!

Actually, no. They have to be compiled and installed, not just copied to a particular folder. According to MPlayer, there's a readme file accompanying the codecs package that gives detailed instructions. Personally, I prefer using Synaptic.
