Ubuntu is wha many people were waiting for. The keywords: is a gnome comunity debian system for newbies for modern desktop systems

It's Gnome: There are other easy linux distros as Mepis, Kaotix, Linsipre or Xandros but centered on KDE
comunity: unlike, in my opinion better polished distros as Linspire or Xandros you can get the full version free (as free beer) from the internet. And they send it to your home also free. They have build a very good comunity around Ubuntu, with a very good comunity support channels (wiki, mail lists, irc.. etc). Also they take cominity feedbak seriously.
Its Debian: as all the mentioned before, it's based on debian, so they do not need to face the problems Debian already has solved, and all the already packaged software for Debian works on Ubuntu. This is many software.
It's for newbies: It works out of the box without almost any problem.
For modern desktop systems: They do not need to agree with the strong debian policy, this is, compile for 586, install many software as default. They suposse in a usual desktop system, with sound, a 3D card, etc without thinking in data centers or web/data centers installations.
I do not like Ubutu because I use years Debian and already I have polished it to my taste, and I love KDE. But I recognize quality when I see it. Anyway there is much hype because a mix of marketing and very vocal (gnome) users.

It's a good distro, very user friendly but I personally think its overrated. I can't really find anything that makes it so different from any other Linux distro in terms of features.

The package selection! Debs are universal, and coupled with an easy to use desktop, Ubuntu rocks!

The defaut package selection in Ubuntu is basically GNOME and a few extra apps, I don't think there is anything special about that since other distros provide the same packages. Debs are universal but you have obviously missed the debate thats been going on about Ubuntu creating packages that are incompatible with various versions of Debian.

i like it, but when im using gnome i find a lack of control (on any distro using gnome i use i find this) i know there is kubuntu and such also though. So i guess ubuntu is like a up-to-date, easy to use but powerful way to use debian system (as it is debian based)

Also i got it free through the post and it cost: El Zilcho!

Personally, I've been very pleased with my test Ubuntu install (Hoary)

I'm running it on an old Dell CpxJ650T laptop

Using the CD install, all hardware was configured correctly. Only problem I encountered was with DNS in resolv.conf changing, now fixed

All sw used stock as per provided on CD apart from Openoffice Beta 1.9 (and a few downloads for security updates)

Works a treat - clean, simple, fast; I like it.

I personally think Ubuntu is great! I have used a couple of n00b distros before like Mandrake, Fedora Core 3 (which is definitely overrated), and SUSE, and none have ever had the vast hardware compatibility that Ubuntu has...Plug in an external hard disk, a DVD, a pen-drive, whatever and it will mount and read it in a few seconds! What's more, I didn't have to play with a load of files and type a bunch of stuff into terminal to get my CD drive working! (Like I had to do in Fedora Core 3, which was a real pain in the ass). The only slight problem I've had so far in Ubuntu is that I'm all too familiar with rpms, so I don't know where to download .deb packages from (Ubuntu packages is the only one I know LoL) and I'm not too sure about installing them either (alien?). All in all, Ubuntu is great, and I hope you take the time to explore it so you can realise how much better it is than the other few distros I've tried!

And another great feature of Ubuntu:

www.ubuntuguide.org

J_k9, read the guide and use apt-get or one of its graphical frontends, like synaptic for installing packages.

for example type in a term: sudo apt-get install abiword

I personally think it's a great distro, after a couple of years using Debian, which I like a _lot_, it's a breeze installing and configuring Ubuntu. And I'm still using Debian

You don't really need to download *.deb packages, just use apt-get to install the packages you require. I guess peoples experiences differ, I have had very few problems with Fedora Core, but maybe its because I am used to it since I have been using Redhat since version 5.x or 6.x.

I just recently installed Ubuntu 5.04 on a Dell Latitude D600, and I was very impressed with the way that it autoconfigured the 802.11g wireless and automatically found the SMB shares over my company's network. Configuring printers was painless. The HAL (hardware abstraction layer) automounts external USB drives with absolutely no configuration. Evolution connected with my company's Microsoft Exchange server (via WebDAV) with no more configuration than suppling the server hostname and my user/password info. Ubuntu also automatically detected the pre-existing WindowsXP partition and correctly configured GRUB for dual-boot.

Ubuntu is positioning itself as a corporate Debian distro, along the lines of Novell SuSE and Red Hat Enterprise. Again, coming from Slackware and Knoppix/Kanotix, I was blown away by the fact that the installation pretty well ran itself, and I had very little post-install configuration to do. As a corporate desktop, Ubuntu is very impressive.

Yes, the debates also argue that if Ubuntu has to keep diverging from Debian base in order to improve, what does that say about the state of Debian? Many also think the incompatability complaints coming from the Debian purist camp are too little, too late .... and about as hollow as someone whining that Foxpro for Win 3.11 is incompatible with XP.

If I do a Debian stable today (which is still officially Woody) my default X Window manager is KDE 2.2, right? Yuck!

i dont get it either. ive used it, but it really isnt that good of a distro TBH. its not easy to use or easy to install and it isnt any less buggy than other distros.

i guess the only advantage that ubuntu has over other debian based distros is x.org, but that is very buggy ATM anyway.

i am surprised that people recommend this distro to noobs as well. it doesnt have a gui installer, the hardware support isnt anything special, there are no configuration tools for anything other than resolution(and this doesnt work very well either), no "getting started" flash intro, no "point and click linux" books available. its just debian with tons of marketing.

its all just based on hype, and its bad for linux as a whole IMO.

give me one good reason to use (k)ubuntu over other debians like mepis.
