vlc will no longer startup - anyone any ideas from the log provided?

Hi,
I believe that after some auto update my vlc player has stopped working.

When running from the command line with 'vlc' i get the following output:

VLC media player 0.8.6 Janus
[00000001] main private error: no memcpy module matched "any"
[00000019] main interface error: no interface module matched "hotkeys, none"
[00000019] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "hotkeys, none" initialization failed
[00000020] main interface error: no interface module matched "screensaver, none"
[00000020] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "screensaver, none" initialization failed
[00000021] main interface error: no interface module matched "any"
[00000021] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "(null)" initialization failed

has anyone any ideas what is going on here?

Also, where would this info normally be saved to if the app crashes?

Thanks

ice.

Perhaps a configuration file is corrupted. I suggest you reinstall with Synaptic Package Manager to insure you get a version of vlc intended for Ubuntu. For my taste I like mplayer better because it brings a lot of codecs with it when installed and I like the UI better. If you can't get vlc to work try mplayer.

I had the same problem. After I deleted .vlc directory under my home directory, vlc works again.

thanks for the update - I have now fixed it and this is what I did:

1. I had updated my repository and an 'update' to it had fekked it somehow.
2. I reverted back to my old repository and completely removed vlc - I guess this must have also removed the .vlc folder??
3. I added the ubuntu vlc repository and reinstalled - now it works as before (minus the firefox plugin - but mplayer works ok for that)

thanks for the replies people - the small suggestions do blossom!!!

ice.
