USB mount issues

Hi all

I've reinstalled a Ubuntu Server 12.04
Every thing is OK up and running

I mounted the USB drive OK, but it comes up with a error message on boot, I've never done this before and would like some one to explain what the issue is, is it a fault with the Ext HDD or a error in the Fstab
It did do some error checking to which I let it do
Error is

Code:
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
/dev/sda1: clean, 91541/30285824 files, 2337675/121114112 blocks
ata_id[440]: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sdb': Invalid argument
Code:
root@maccos:~# blkid
/dev/sda1: UUID="0f89abba-3255-430e-bff5-f5c769dab8dd" TYPE="ext4"
/dev/sda5: UUID="100bc9f1-638d-4e63-9812-80fe36261d13" TYPE="swap"
/dev/sdb1: LABEL="backups" UUID="e4ee9a68-c2f3-40be-9a69-4f4202899499" TYPE="ext3"
root@maccos:~# mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 /external
root@maccos:~# cd /external
root@maccos:/external# ls
autobackup maccosbackup-20101108.tar.gz maccoswwwbackup-20101108.tar.gz webmin_Config_Backup2010 www
root@maccos:/external#
My USB HDD is backups
My Fstab is like so

Code:
# External hard Drive
UUID=e4ee9a68-c2f3-40be-9a69-4f4202899499 /external      ext3    defaults        0       2
Any help would be great

TT

It may be that it takes a minute for your hard drive to power on - it may not be ready when the computer comes looking for it. You could test that by turning the hard drive off and on and see how long it takes for it to reappear in /dev/.

That fstab looks fine to me... Just to try something new, instead of using UUID=blahblahblah, you could use LABEL=backups (it should not make a difference though).
