I upgraded (via the command-line upgrade process) my workstation from KUbuntu 22.04 to 22.10 which worked fine.... But now the desktop icons no longer work. I deleted them, and then re-added a couple (like a link to VLC and LibreOffice) and no go. Note I used the right 'click'in the menu, add to desktop, so no manual build of link involved. The applications work fine starting from the menu, but after adding to the desktop or panel, the desktop/panel icons will not start the application(s) when you double click them. Sometimes you'll see an icon start to appear on the menu bar (as it should) but immediately disappears. I did check the 'box' for executable in the properties of the links. Permissions seem fine. So at this point I am not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions would be good. I did a web search, but nothing popped out as what I'm running into.

Upgrade installed 'wslu'. This was the problem. A known bug I guess.

So to get get desktop icons working:

as root> apt purge wslu*

Problem solved. Took me a few hours to run this down and I've used Linux since the beginning.... Hope this will help someone else that runs into this problem .
