I upgraded into Edgy Eft a few days back (from Dapper Drake) and so far I'm unhappy with Edgy, because it took 2.5 days just to upgrade and the so called "update" deleted half of my system (including XServer :S) from some which is unknown reason, I already fixed the XServer problem however after fixing it I've found several additional problems which need fixing
A) All my fonts are messed up, and all of the sudden all of my system is using some weird, barely readable font on ALL the applications, whether it is Nautilus,FireFox System files, Terminal(including tty terminal) etc. and i wish to return all my font back to its original form before the upgrade (as it was in default) I know that there is an option for changing the fonts in System->Preferences->Font but I dont like anyone of those fonts
B)My Desktop Icon are twice as large, and theres annoying Computer and trash icons which i cannot delete. furthermore theres details about files that i do not need (Size, amount of files in folder etc.) right below the file/folder name
C)My Nautilus seems to be without a command line or anything like that... theres only the line with "File, Edit" and those stuff
D)Around 60% of all my programs/files/configurations are lost, and i seek a way to retrieve them
E)My Ubuntu cannot, write or see/read Hebrew... instead of hebrew letters i see wierd dice like shapes
F)ALL of my Audio/Video files sound very very bad... choppy and with wierd static noise in the background
G)My Nvidia Drivers are constantly getting uninstalled after every reboot
Thanks in advance.
p.s.
Heres some additional information which might help:
I'd suggest you backup your home partition and important configuration files, then do a clean install. There were a lot of problems for some people dist-upgrading from Dapper to Edgy, which is sad since that's one of Debian's biggest features
Hmm, if clean install is my only option then i think im gonna change distro... i wanted to advance into something else for quite a while, but i didnt had the strenght to backup
Are you sure that a complete clean install is my only option?
I know what your going through, It makes me think that some Linux distros have a long way to go to match the usability of Windows xp.
You ever ran an upgraded Windows OS(and one that wasn't clean installed), it isn't much better, not to mention slower than anything I've ever used. Always do a clean install on something as important as an OS, if you ask me.
I just installed 6.10 Edgy last night. Got all of my stuff re-installed and some different hardware working(external hard drive, tv card, etc..) using instructions I found while running 6.06.
I just reinstalled Ubuntu610 last night as well with no problems this time at all. No reason at all for my past troubles with ubuntu just was all messed up, as I said no troubles this time at all it went so well I am going to hold off switching distros. I have installed hundreds of copys of windows of all versions and their all pretty much the same and trouble free. I dont want to start something here but all I'm saying is Linux developers could learn something from windows developers after all there is a reason that Microsoft has 95% market share (underhanded tactics aside) The way I see it in about 10 years or so I think were going to end up with 2 kinds of linux a slackware type linux for power users and an ubuntu/suse type linux for regular users.
I've installed my fair share of Windows machines too and they can be problematic. For example, I had to patch a Windows installation cd or it simply wouldn't install on a new pc, BSOD. If you're talking about clean installs, then compare it to linux clean installs from good distros. Heck, you can even try the OS first and see if it fits your needs.
The funniest thing is, Windows refused to install on this machine because I use a SATA drive. I had to make a diskette -yes, a diskette nowadays... sigh- with the SATA drivers for my controller. I loaded them up and... Windows doesn't see my drive. I did like 3 different linux installations and they all saw the drive with no problems at all.
I'm confused about how you upgraded. With the code block you show you appear to have upgraded 3 times with 3 different approaches. gksudo "update-manager -c -d" was all I did and my upgrade from Dapper to Edgy went well. The update-manager approach was the simplest and recommended by Ubuntu. This process updated my sources list for me. It has been my practice to favor Ubuntu repositories and to use Synaptic. I have however compiled a few items. I avoid deb packages which weren't built for Ubuntu. This may be part of the reason that my upgrade went well and yours apparently didn't.
One things for sure I would rather use linux no matter what its problems are or how many problems it has than use windows of any type, and I will not give microsoft any more money, for vista or anything else.
Vista is a real ball of snow incoming... it'll be a hit or a big flop, no in between.
If Microsoft could address the security issues of its OS, I'd have no real issue with it. It looks like from that standpoint, Vista might be the best of the bunch. I've never really had any major problems out of Windows, I just got tired of the constant spyware, Virus warnings, etc.
Vista might be a major improvement, but I think I'll still prefer Linux.
Finally getting right after all theses years would be nice but one still has to deal with Microsoft the company with the ethics of a swamp rat. Even if the fix is in, the user control will be even more so. New forms of DRM, more ways to destroy the customers fair use, and news ways to lock the user in.
I think the ridiculous requirements, rewritten network stack and stupid licensing all around are some of the biggest issues. I have to agree that Windows XP is not a bad operating system and for me it was stable. The spyware and crap it can have cripple it a lot, especially on non techie people who just click anything that pops up and use IE/Outlook Express.
I'm using linux now because it's usable, as simple as that. Some years ago I tried it then fell back to Windows because "something" was missing. Nowadays I only miss my capability to record music nicely using VST, firewire, etc and the very occasional game (got lots of more important things to do lol).
I'm not interested in Vista the least but for those who are and get dissapointed, linux might be a viable option.
