[Solved]Update without internet access

Hello everybody,

New to Linux via Ubuntu, I've the following problem :

My newly installed portable (PII 330 Mhz, 192 Mb Ram, 6Gb HD, please dont' laugh ) need a lighter window manager.
I know that IceW, or WindowMaker, or another could help but my problem lies here :
I don't have any internet connection on that portable, meaning that I've problems with apt-get like commands.
Is there a way to download, let's say' an ISO image of a CD-ROM with extra packages to allow system update with net connection ? (Als I can find for Mandrake distibutions from time to time...)
( - My only Internet access can be done through a Windows machine...
- I've tried to go on apt_get refenrenced sites to download packets but dependencies management by hand is quite complicated )

Any other way to achieve this goal is welcome...

Best regards,

Zilog

Why not download the packages you need via your windows machine and save them to a usb thumb drive (assuming your laptop has usb) and then access the usb thum drive and install the packges using "dpkg". Most minimalist window managers are quite small in size and don't have many dependencies.

Download the files and install them using the dpkg utility as said above. If you get hold of any debian dvd use the apt-cdrom utily for adding more packages to your system.

For an old laptop as yours, I bet it has a RS-232 serial connector.
I then strongly reccommend you an external hardware modem, even if it's not for free.
(I did the same, i.e. buying an external modem for switching to Linux an Omnibook XE3, Celeron/850, HDD 10 GB, and I don't regret.)

The following modem worked for me better than the internal winmodem did under wingoze, I mean it ALWAYS connects to 115200 (and the compression works!!!):

http://www.trendnet.com/fr/products/TFM-560X.htm

I bought it for about 35 EUR TTC.

You may also try Mepis as a KDE alternative to Ubuntu. Worked for me.
