I've been running Warty Ubuntu for several months with much success. With the release of Hoary I'm looking to update but given some of the major changes (XFree86 -> X.Org etc) I wondered if it would be better to do a fresh install rather than an apt-get dist-upgrade? Specifically, I was wondering whether the update would leave a bunch of files I no longer need on my disk or take advantage of all the speed improvements?
I'm sure the update will work fine but I'm just curious if it would be as 'good' (using your favourite arbitrary unit of measurement) as if I did a fresh install. Has anybody tried both and found the fresh install to be significantly faster?
Many thanks in advance for any thoughts/ramblings/haiku you can offer.
Debian distros are designed to be updated through apt-get, so I am sure that your upgrade will be successful and will remove redundant files or packages.
I upgraded with apt-get with no issues.. As stated, it should work just fine. I've not compared it to a fresh install, though I've had no issues with speed or anything else if that helps.
Originally posted by muzza I don't have broadband so I'm awaiting the CD (someone else is d/l-ingfor me)
Will I have to do a complete install, or is there an option to upgrade with the CD?
Put the hoary cd on and do:
Code:
sudo apt-cdrom add
Is that simple.
I upgrade but had some problems. Mainly with gdeslets and Synaptic. Also I need to reboot
in the medle of process because hal and udev are give me error messages.
I had a preview of hoary installed and synaptic worked different...
i think i will try a fresh install on another partition, just to check.
I mounted my /home on a different partition, so when I need to switch between warty/hoard/debian it pretty much takes me about half an hour to get the system back up. I would recommend it as a way to go if you dont need to install too many packages that do not already come with the distribution.
ps. the reason why i keep switching back and forward is experimenting the openafs and/or arla module builds. They still don't have a stable version for 2.6.* kernel.
