*SOVLED* Unmount kills /dev/scd0 - Ubuntu 8.10 amd64

im not new to linux by any means but i have the most annoying problem i think ive ever had.
got a fresh amd64 ubuntu install on a brand new laptop and everytime i uninstall a cd or dvd it kills the device altogether the point where i have to reboot to get it up again, no matter if i mount/eject from GUI or command line - its just gone
can anyone give me an idea as to why this is happening?

solution: changed SATA mode from Enhanced to Compatible in BIOS
strangely enough i had to change the mode from enhanced to compatible to get Ubuntu installed otherwise the installation would crash after paritioning...after installation was a success i changed it back to Enhanced

...wondering if this is a known bug w/ the scsi module
